The Royal University of Phnom Penh
The Royal University of Phnom Penh is Cambodia’s oldest and one of the largest public universities. It hosts almost 20,000 scholarship and full-fee paying students, across a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. It is unique in Cambodia for offering specialist degrees in fields including the sciences, humanities and social sciences, as well as professional degrees in fields such as information technology, electronics, psychology, social work, development studies, and tourism. Due to its many achievements, RUPP has full membership of the ASEAN University Network (AUN).
The vision of the University is to continue to lead higher education in Cambodia, focusing on excellence in teaching and learning, committed to research for the development of the country.
RUPP has over 450 full-time staff. All of its 335 academic staff members hold tertiary qualifications, including 15 PhDs and 280 Masters’ degrees. They are supported by over 120 administrative and maintenance staff. In addition, the university maintains links with Cambodian and international NGOs, national and international development partners, local and international universities and government ministries.
The Department of Tourism
The Department of Tourism (DoT) opened in 2001 with the support and collaboration of three universities: RUPP, the University of Technology, Sydney, Australia and the University of Bologna, Italy. Currently the Department provides the well regarded interdisciplinary tourism programs with the main focus on high standards in research based and sustainable development education. DoT-RUPP has built academic and research collaboration with universities in Italy (University of Rome, University of Bologna, and Trento University), Germany (University of Georg-August Göttingen), Japan (University of Tokyo), and Korea (Seoul National University).
The Department Staff are highly qualified and have many years of teaching, research and industry related experience from a wide range of backgrounds, including applied tourism, economics, business, rural development, agricultural sciences, culture and heritage management, natural resource management, sustainable development, sustainability sciences, community development, sociology, research and other related subjects. Current department members hold PhDs from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, UK and the USA and as well as MAs from Australia, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Thailand and the UK. Staff maintain strong links with industry, from the private, public and NGO sectors.
